Institution of Engineers (India), is the premier professional body of the country . The IE(I) was established in the year 1920 as a professional society of all disciplines of engineering and was normally inaugurated in 1920 by Lord Chemes Ford, then Viceroy & Governor-General of India. The institution was granted as royal charter from Kind George V, in 1935. “To promote & advance the science, practice & business of engineering in all its branches in in India”, which is now a unique professional body comprising fifteen engineering disciplines with an overall membership of around 0.5 million. It is the first professional body to represent India in several international bodies, such as, World Mining Congress, World Congress for Energy, World Federation of Engineering Organization (WFEO), Commonwealth Engineers Council (CEC), Federation of International du baten (FEB), Federation of engineering institutions of south & central Asia etc. It has bilateral agreement with a number of professional societies across the globe.

IE(I) functions with and among the professional engineers, academicians and researchers. It provides a vast array of technical, professional & supporting services to government, to industries to academics and to the engineering community. (E(I) with its headquarter at Kolkatta, administered by a national council with the elected president as head through council and operates through 124 states and local centres located at the capital cities and towns of industrial and academic importance all over the country and with eight overseas chapters. Udaipur local centre is one of these centres with strength of 536 engineers, and one of the most active centre, which has organized hundreds of technical talks so far on the relevant topics of interest of that time.

A group of about 30 young engineers was organize under the banner of “Young Engineers Association” with the main objective of starting local centre of the Institution of Engineers (I) and credited for establishment of Udaipur Local Centre of the Institution of Engineers (India) in the year 1978. The centre formally started functioning in 1979 under the dynamic leadership of Prof. K.N. Nag. Er. Y.S. Sardalia’s contribution is remembered for raising the land and building fund and strengthening the Udaipur Local Center. The building of Institution of Engineers is situated in the developed area of lake city and having 15000 (sft.). Centre had commenced with a small library of technical books and are on way for its expansion.

The local centre is having a pride of hosting national conventions at Udaipur viz. National convention of metallurgy & material science division. National convention of Agriculture engineering division-twice, National convention of Mining engineering division- twice, National convention of environmental engineering division & National convention of chemical engineering division-twice , National Convention of Electronics and Telecommunication, National convention of Architectural Engineers, National Convention of Mechanical Engineers. And also, the seminar on “Technical education of Rajasthan in National Horizon” and all India seminar on “Environmental impact assessment”. The Udaipur local Centre is having a golden opportunity to organize “22 Indian Engineering Congress” at Udaipur and 33rd Indian Engineering Congress at Udaipur.

The members of the Centre meet every month on technical discussions, seminars, symposia and field visits where engineers and scientists of international and national repute come and discuss the achievements.
